Oh, starting a blog… How 2006.
As with many other cultural trends, I feel like I’m getting to this party late (my friend, Mr. Keith, for instance, has been doing an online diary for six years).
In trying to find a good blog name, I was continually rebuffed by the cultural detritus of other posters… many of whom abandoned their excellently named sites after only a post or two. Thus, I was unable to go with pareidolia, idolatry, reflections and refractions or various other sweet ideas…
I suppose this reinforces one of the ways that the internet stifles creativity… it forces you to realize that you are nowhere near as clever, hip or sesquipedalian as you may have hoped. In fact, it is almost inevitable that someone has beaten you to *it* (whatever neologism, cultural innovation, or creative product you think you’ve just stumbled upon).
As an aside, I went with frangibility because I think it captures the fundamental uncertainty of life. Everything around us – our bodies, our minds, our relationships, our (oh so precious) consumer electronics – is so undeniably, unavoidably fragile. In posts to follow, I plan to celebrate this fragility, as it is (in my opinion) one of the characteristics that gives our lives meaning on an existential level.
I was really hoping that my first post would make me sound like a pretentious boob. Secret victory condition: achieved!
